When Black Christian Ministry Becomes A Minstrel Show
We don’t think there is anything more embarrassing, shameful or pathetic than witnessing a black church leader speak out against same-sex marriage or homosexuality in general. Our disgust actually doesn’t just stem from a human rights perspective, but in truth from a black manhood and African American cultural perspective.
Before we explain what we mean we want to call attention to the most recent perpetrator and offender against black manhood, black independent thought, black freedom, black expression and black power. That would be the honorable Rev. Anthony Evans, associate pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Washington DC. Reverend Evans made headlines for his antics last week at the D.C. Board of Elections & Ethics hearing when he asked the board’s two members if they have “homosexual” family members or friends and if deep down in their hearts if they were for same-sex marriage.
According to the dc Agenda blog, he didn’t stop there but went on to request that two board members withdraw from the proceedings if they “answered yes to any of these questions.” He was applauded for his performance by some other attendees of the hearing. No doubt some of his church followers.
We just don’t understand where these hateful sanctified black folks are coming from with this anti-gay marriage business. We’re quite clueless and at a complete loss of explanation. Oh sure, many none blacks have said how could they be that way with blacks having also been oppressed. But we don’t really pay attention to those inquiries or retorts to this kind of homophobia because as our dear NaNa used to say, pain has no memory. And that end our experience says neither does human nature.
We want to make clear that there are a great many number of African American churches and clergy who do not condone such discriminatory attitudes towards LGBT equality or same-sex marriage. Unfortunately because they are not newsworthy and unnoticed, it’s the haters who’re getting all the attention from the media. And they’re loving it.
And this brings us back to the destructive anti-tolerant messages that these black ministers promote in the name of the lord. Here’s our main beef with black ministers who’re vocally against same-sex marriage: African Americans came to the US in chains. Upon being sold to the slave master we were introduced to Christianity. It’s not even our native religion. And we were introduced to Christianity with the heel of the white slave master’s boot cocked securely in the tender crooks of our necks.
The white slave master used the bible to promote slavery and the inferiority of the black man well after the Civil War was fought and slaves freed. The King James version of the bible has no less than 100 scriptures endorsing slavery. And the white slave owner firmly believed that it was his divine right to own the negro and keep him in chains—and do anything else he pleased with the negro and to the negro.
We ask: how could a self-respecting black man preach the gospel of the white slave owner in the form of homophobia or any other kind of oppressive measures when it’s known that the white slave master used that same bible to keep the black man in chattel and chains. How could a black man go to bed with that slave owner in thought, deed and practice? It’s beyond our wildest imaginings or comprehension.
What kind of black man would do such a thing?
Here us loud and clear: we have nothing against Christianity. But what we do find highly objectionable is when a black man Christian or otherwise does the bidding and legwork for his slave masters’ children—-better known as today’s white Christian right.
And what pisses us off to no end is when the LGBT community attacks Obama and dares to accuse him of homophobia. It’s just not true. And we say this because Obama during his presidential campaign told black Californians on no uncertain terms last summer not to support Proposition 8. While white people gay and straight still remain confused at the mixed messaging it was all too clear to the state’s black population when the presidential candidate stated, “I don’t believe in same sex marriage and I do not support Prop 8.”
Black Californians understood EXACTLY what Obama meant with his purposeful mixed message. And what he meant was:
“I don’t support same sex marriage but I’ll be goddamn if I’m going to bed with the white slave masters children and their evil bidding with this Prop 8. Black people you do well to do the same. Stay out of it black Christian Californians. It’s none of our business. If you don’t believe in same sex marriage then don’t vote on it at all.”
All black Californians got the message loud and clear. It was those who’d already sold their souls to the Christian right slave masters children who went on ahead anyway and supported Prop 8. That’s the truth of the matter. And it’s time the general public knew about it. Even the Nation of Islam remained eerily quiet in 2008 in regards to Proposition 8. And that’s cause like Obama, they knew who was behind it.
So to these black preachers and their following who continue to do the bidding and deeds of their ex slave master and their slave master’s children we say—-SHAME ON YOU. You’re the worst example of Stephen Fetchitt the world has ever seen. You’re a stain on the journey of black manhood and black progress in America. You’re nothing but a minstrel—a throwback to a time when our identities and beings were used for merriment and a black man’s dignity was no more valuable than a dog on street. Your backward ways and allegiance—- not to God, but to your former slave master and his hateful ways is a travesty that if you ever wake up will torture you throughout hell and eternity.
