RENWLs Gay Inc. Loser Of The Week
And the Gay Inc. Loser Of The Week award goes out to:
MR. MICHAEL “I’m a bitter entitled a#*hole” BUCHANAN! Horray!
Oh, you don’t know him or anything—at least we don’t think. Naw…he’s a nobody—–with a capital N.
The following was Michael’s response to a posting of our invite to volunteers for a phonebank event this weekend to defeat the anti-abortion clause in Public Option Healthcare (well—what’s left of it.) Our dear dear friend Robert Oliveraz was the one who kindly “shared” it for us on California Assembly Speaker candidate John Perez’s fanpage on Facebook. Read what this particularly benevolent gentleman had to say:
Michael commented:
“And what will women do for me if I help defeat a bill that doesn’t affect me in any way?”
We looked at his question with awe and otherworldliness. Our mouth wide open with chin dangling just inches from the floor—we batted our eyes and looked again. Yes, the words were still there. Oh come on now, he must be kidding, we insisted. So we tattered out a nifty reply to the kidder—humorously chiding him more or less in saying that when one group of people’s rights are under attack then everyone’s rights are threatened. Do the favor. You never know when your turn might come around. Hmmm…
As quick as a whip Michael replied:
“Well, in fact, my turn has been up and voted down again and again. 31 times to be precise. And a lot of those voters were women. Where were they when we needed them? And actually I am concerned with people aborting fetuses, for example, based on future possible abilities to determine sexual orientation. So I might just support legislation that protects the future sexual minorities.
And I am also aware that, even if abortion were outlawed, the rich would find a way to obtain one safely for their own families while the poor suffer. So I see it as a class issue, not a moral one. But I digress.
My point is, women are not even unified on this issue so why do they need me? especially if they can’t be counted on when our rights come up for a vote. Plus, I will never be faced with the decision in my life, where every mother could potentially give birth to a gay child. yet she doesn’t want that child to be equal? Hmm.
So I might be willing to deal with the right on this issue. After all, so many gays want to adopt. Seems like we could find some common ground here. I would support a ban on abortions based on the gender or orientation of the fetus. maybe even legal limits to abortions. But surely, I am the only one talking about it in these terms, so a snowball has a better chance in hell, I know.”
No. He wasn’t kidding. And don’t trouble yourself looking for Michael’s comments on John Perez’s fanpage. Perez or his assistant had the good sense to quickly delete them.
Can we just add that in addition to Michael’s last statement we also think it’s no accident that marriage equality organizations big and small across the state including corporate megabucks deathstar EQCA—do absolutely zero coalescing, support or opinion of other causes and issues unrelated to marriage equality.
ZILCH. NADA. KA-POEY. NOTHING.
Bottom line: if you’re not gay—you AND your problems simply do not exist. Wait. We take that back. It’s actually more along the lines of, What Have You Done For Me Lately?
In other words—-a fruit like Michael—pardon the pun–doesn’t fall all that far from the tree. We don’t get it. Everybody knows the story of Harvey Milk and his infamous labor organizing skills. Everybody knows about his work with the Teamsters Union—bringing the union together with gay bars in San Francisco for a successful boycott of Coors beer which culminated in in the union hiring more gay truck drivers and Coors signing a union contract with the Teamsters. It’s called coalescing. Clearly a word the marriage equality leadership these days is quite unfamiliar with.
So even though this Michael guy is clearly a turd without question, we’re not surprised by his attitude. Not one bit. On an organizational level this same attitude though not nearly as audaciously outspoken is all too clear alive and well throughout the marriage equality movement. Yet they can’t seem to figure out why 31 times in 31 states…
…and Michael Buchanan gets our Gay Inc. Loser Of The Week Award.
PS. Now accepting suggestions and recommendations for next week’s recipient.
