Obama To Meet Author Of Uganda Gay Death Bill At National Prayer Breakfast
According to UK gay publication Pink News, David Bahati, the individual who authored the Ugandan “gay death” bill will be attending the annual National Prayer Breakfast which is organized by The Fellowship – a secretive conservative Christian organization which is also known as The Family. Its members include politicians, religious leaders and corporate executives. The event in Washington DC, is scheduled to take place on February 4th.
There has been much controversy surrounding the supposed gay death penalty bill. RENWL discovered in a recent post (Uganda Death Penalty For Gays A Fat Big Lie?) that the bill would impose the death penalty on gays who have forced sex with minors, disabled people or while living with HIV, along with repeat offenders. Other homosexuality offenses, such as failing to report incidents to police, would result in imprisonment.
There also already exists an identical law for heterosexual sex offences in Uganda.
While the Ugandan president has backed away from the bill due to international pressure, David Bahati, author of the bill, has remained committed to the bill’s original language citing that the bill protects traditional family.
Nonetheless it is expected that the death provision is likely to be removed from the bill before it goes before Ugandan Parliament in late February 2010.
