Liberal Press Officially Kicks Off Midterm Hysteria; Dems Losing House, DADT Repeal Hopeless

email

We're not all that crazy about the conservative press, either.

Look, all we can say is after being suckered punched over and over months on end by believing everything our friend Marta E. posted on her Facebook profile about the certain demise of Healthcare Reform featured every three days in the headlines of most of the mainstream liberal press—-we’re kinda jaded at this point when these media outlets start once again to preach gloom ‘n’ doom.

So when we read in a fellow gay rag that’s picked up a story that the Dems are freaked out about House prospects in August in regards to the midterms in November, we know that the liberal press is revving up for a nice long-term high anxiety session for their readership. Which, if they really keep folks on edge sweating bullets of anxiety for the long haul like they did for Healthcare Reform, it could translate into some cute change from some of their more loyal advertisers.

Problem with this most recent spate of OH MY GAWD WE’RE GONNA LOSE THE HOUSE AND DADT REPEAL WON’T HAPPEN AND THE REPUBS WILL MARCH ALL THE FAGS OUT TO THE DESERT TO SHOOT US JUST LIKE WHAT HAPPENED TO THE RUSSIAN ROYAL FAMILY kinda stories is that the Repubs are effing broke. So how is that they have an absolute shoe-in in terms of taking over Congress with five dollars and some change in the till?

• Money: On both a macro level and a micro level, Republicans are seriously behind in the money chase. Most candidates enrolled in the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s Frontline program for endangered incumbents have huge cash leads over their rivals, and the DCCC has nearly twice as much on hand as the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Reports recently filed with the Federal Election Commission show some real money problems ahead for the Republican National Committee – especially as it heads into the Congressional mid-term cycle.  Despite strong showings in polls, the RNC is spending more money than it is raising – twice as much in July alone.  Currently, the official Republican Party has only a bit over $5 million on hand to use for candidates in one of the most consequential Congressional election cycles in modern political history.

The financial problems plaguing the RNC are so grim that the competing Democratic National Committee was among the first to break the story as RNC leaders remained quiet.  Only $5.5 million was raised for the Republican Party in July compared to $11 million spent, ending the month with more than $5.3 million in the bank and $2.2 million in debt.  latest report showThe Republican National Committee spent twice as much as it raised in July, leaving the committee with just over $5 million on hand with less than three months left before the 2010 midterm elections.

Obviously pleased by the lack of GOP fundraising prowess, the DNC showed off its numbers, raising and spending nearly $12 million in July, with $4 million transferred to state party organizations.  The RNC only transferred $1.5 million to state parties and had to request a $10 million line-of-credit at its recent summer meeting in Kansas City.

But today we get a completely different take on things from the Washington Post. Suddenly the RNC is flush with cash. How did that happen? That’s just it. It hasn’t.

One has to learn how to read these days because the fear factor is pretty high in terms of whether the DNC can or won’t be able to pull off in the midterms.  Our take is that this time around cash is king. And from that angle the DNC is looking a helluva lot better than the Repubs.  Why this matters to LGBTs is that it is RIGHT to be concerned about the midterms and if the repubs take over the House. We don’t want that. But we also don’t want to victimized with some news source yelling fire every five minutes shooting our nerves to hell, either.

Yes, we have problems. As the Why The Dems Will Keep The House post up above points out, ” Democrats are saddled with bad polls and unpopular leaders, and the national mood wants a change from the status quo.” And he also points out that Dems have every reason to be optimistic. Regardless of what the polls may say right now, it’s a lot harder to dislodge a majority than it is to beat back the minority from taking control.

We urge everyone in the LGBT community to read a variety of political news reports and publications mainstream and LGBT news sources. Don’t just settle for the word of the Washington Post or Politico or any fag rag including ours. Get a consensus of reports and opinions first before sounding alarms. Because as far as the press is concerned in the coming months as we edge closer to the midterms, every attempt will be made to rock your world in terms of gloom and doom and the fear factor.
