Karen Bass Responds to Our Bishop Charles E. Blake Post With A Post Of Her Own
And hit play to getcha boogie on. Hey!
This track is from back in the day when the sistas worked it out with them bigazz afro wigs—-weaves had another coupla decades to go before they hit the scene. We had to find this track. It’s so fitting.
On Thursday we posted the story NOM Honors LA Black Mega Church Leader For Yes On 8 Support And Defense Of Marriage. In it, we brought attention to the fact that Bass along with other black Los Angeles politicians Curran Price and Mark Ridley-Thomas have remained virtually silent on the outspoken support of local black ministers for Proposition 8.
These three black politicians supposedly support same-sex marriage. Or at least they’ve said so in mumblings in the past.
Anyway, that post of ours has been flying around the Internet since it went up; we hadn’t expected such a response. But clearly we struck a nerve. So we thought, okay, maybe we should post this on the wall of Bass’s Facebook page. Maybe she needs to see it to better gauge what’s on the minds of some of her constituents.
Well, we go to her page and there she has posted the endorsement of Bishop Charles E. Black of West Angeles Christian Center for her campaign. Not only that, on her Web site she also has his endorsement front row and center.
You know, we actually wrote a scathing, full throated and long-winded post in response to Bass’s actions. But after reading it we thought about it and just decided—-why? If this is cool with local black gay folks—if this is how they roll then why should we wear ourselves out in objecting to it? These gay and same gender loving Negroes obviously could care less what Bass does. And these so called gay white folks in charge of being gay and white have demonstrated themselves as far as Bass is concerned to have balls the size of peanuts.
We’re going to say the following and then we’re done with it:
Black bigotry reared its ugly head in 2008 unlike many of us have ever seen. It does not matter that the original estimate for black voters in favor of Prop 8 was was shamelessly over-inflated. Or that many white gay folks jumped on top of those wrong figures like white on rice—-revealing a smouldering racism of their own. Even with all that it doesn’t make the bigotry that revealed itself in our community any less potent or less harmful to our community. The fact that the "single issue" of gay marriage uncovered that bigotry doesn’t mean that it should get a free ride because the black community is struggling with "so many other issues," as Bass herself has pointed out in the past. The responsibility to address that bigotry—-gay marriage or no gay marriage—–belongs to us and only us however it was brought out into the light.
As long as these church leaders are supported in their bigotry our people, our children, will keep dying—from either AIDS, poor self esteem aka self-destructive self-loathing, suicide, denial, shame, unsafe sexual practices, lying about their sexuality, putting others at risk, alienation from their families, etc.
Bass poses with South LA Church leaders.
We don’t know why Sean Dugar, one of our Facebook connects keeps talkin’ about "game changers" in local black politics. Ain’t no game changers. The game changes when black politicians say to those black ministers who preach against the same gender loving children of their communities and take their cues from destructive organizations like NOM—when these politicians say to these ministers, "why do you do the bidding of the white religious right—-you know they mean our people no good straight and gay—you know that it hurts some of our own when you do their bidding—why do you still take orders from the slave master’s children to shape our people’s attitudes on black families, black identity, black sexuality, black love and black children—why would you do that to our people? "
That’s the kind of game changing we’re looking for—when a black politician can step up to someone like NOM honored Bishop Charles E. Blake and bring it like that—-not tout his endorsement in some type of psychotic childish mockery after being criticized for silence in the face of Blake’s bigotry. Karen Bass and all those like her are not change. Karen Bass is yet another unoriginal self-serving coward masquerading as black pride. It’s as simple as that.
Now go post that on ya’ goddamn Facebook profile Miss Thing.
