Karen Bass Backs Anti-Gay Marriage City Council Candidate: Here’s Your Chance To Ask Her Why

NOTE: We wrote this post before thoroughly reading the “invite.” It’s not an invite. It’s an announcement. Invites are free.  We know cause we checked the Webster Dictionary definition of an invite. This isn’t one. It’s $100.00 a pop. If we can go see Elizabeth Taylor and James Earle Jones for free with front row seats and la Liz herself winking playfully at us every time she flubbed a line, we’re hardly droppin’ that kinda’ coin to listen to two local politicians talk shop. Our unemployment disbursements don’t cover such exciting political excursions anyway. But if you got it like that be sure and read the following because if you can pay a hundred bucks to go see these two you then you should be entitled to interrupt the conversation at will with some questions and thoughts of your own, we think.

Big shout of thanks to Vincent Jones for posting this. We’ve never met speaker Karen Bass. We almost did once. But missed her literally by a hairline as we were uber late to a black LGBT meet ‘n’ greet at Catch One. It had been arranged by Jasmyne Cannick several months ago. We never got over that—missing speaker Bass and all. There’s just something about that lovely smile of hers that makes us all but certain that we’d be BFF right upon meeting. It’s a gut feeling. Kinda warm ‘n’ fuzzy but gutty nonetheless.

That’s what made us sad when we arrived and she’d already left. But our tardiness to the event wasn’t a complete loss. We stuck around for a bit and took in the sideshow of Jasmyne tearing into Ron Buckmire for showing up uninvited. He stood his ground though so it was a fair fight. We still wouldn’t have wanted to be in his shoes. Nonetheless that nasty li’l catfight kinda’ made up some for missing Miss Bass.

Thanks to Vincent however, we have a second chance to meet Miss Bass in the flesh. And the good news is—-so can you. Liberty Hill is sponsoring a “conversation” between Karen Bass and speaker-elect John Perez on Saturday Feb. 13th at the California Club from 6-7pm.

We wonder what on earth they’ll talk about?

Oh we know! Duh! See, John Perez is, well, he’s gay. You probably already knew that. What’s cool about that though is Miss Bass as you’ve probably already surmised from our missing the LGBT meet ‘n’ greet with her where Jasmyne Cannick put Ron Buckmire on blast afterwards—-you’ve probably surmised that Miss Bass is pretty gay friendly. Isn’t that cool? That’s why we get this warm fuzzy BFF vibe about her. Except something kinda’ funky come up recently with her named attached to it and we bet that’s probably why she and John Perez are having this “conversation.” We think he’s gonna tell her off.

Yea, there’s this guy named Steven Neal who’s running for city council in Long Beach. You may have already seen one of our posts about him so far: Local Black Candidate Called Out On Same Sex Marriage Remarks

Without rehashing the complete drama of it all this Neal guy more or less said in a recent magazine interview that he doesn’t support gay marriage and that being gay is a choice. Okay. We can live with the not supporting gay marriage—hell President Obama doesn’t support gay marriage—-but that “choice” shit is not happening. It speaks of the worst kind of ignorance, closed-mindedness and prejudice towards same gender loving people. This man is also African American and an assistant pastor at a church.

Karen Bass is endorsing him for Long Beach City Council 9th District. It hurts our heart to no end. She’s obviously been hoodwinked. There’s got to be a logical explanation. She’s too pretty to back somebody like that. Pretty people don’t back people with ugly hearts.

Back to reality: Miss Bass along with several other local elected officials including Mark Ridley-Thomas and Sen. Curran Price. Four Long Beach Democratic Clubs have already sent Neal an open letter demanding that he explain his statements. Might not be a bad idea to ask Miss Bass if you attend her “conversation” with openly gay speaker-elect John Perez what’s up with her endorsement. Or, why not ask John Perez how he feels about it? After all, they are colleagues. Surely he must find such endorsements disturbing to say the least.
