EQCA’s Geoff Kors Needs To Quit His Jive Lyin’ Ways

Geoff Kors talkin’ shit again

This always happens right as we get ready to leave our PC after being online for a spell. Just as we were about to click our way to our desktop to shut down for the morning until later on in the day, did our eye catch something rather odd. Wait, is that Geoff Kors writing for the Huff Post, again? What in the world of rich gay white male crazy nonsense could he possibly be babbling about this time?

Well, we found out. Apparently Kors has decided that reaching out to communities of color and other minorities is a good thing. Too bad it took him the entirety of the No On 8 campaign, $40 million in donations down the drain,  him and his staff’s single-minded destruction of the 2010 marriage equality effort and a federal trial that he originally objected against to finally arrive to that conclusion. But hey, better late than never.

In his Huff Post essay today Gay Marriage: From a Federal Case to a National Movement—the part that we find hardest to choke down is this passage:

Here in California we are working hard with allies like the California NAACP, Chinese for Affirmative Action, the Equal Justice Society, and religious and civil leaders in many communities, supporting and championing their priorities and throwing our weight behind their efforts.

This man is clearly on drugs. When has EQCA visibly supported any causes in relationship to any minority in the state of California? Happening right now alongside of the Prop 8 trial is the trial for the murder of young African American Oscar Grant, who was shot to death in cold blood by white Bart cop Johannes Mehserle as the boy lay face down on the Bart platform unarmed. Unlike the Prop 8 trial however, the Mehserle trial was moved from the Bay area—–Kors’s immediate turf—and down to Los Angeles. Why was it moved? Well, according to the LA Times it was because the nature of the crime has an implied racial aspect to it in that the defendant is Caucasian and the victim was African American.

Alameda County Superior Judge Morris Jacobson ruled that the trial should be moved from Oakland where the killing occurred to Los Angeles because, “The nature of this crime has an implied racial aspect to it in that the defendant is Caucasian and the victim was African American,” Judge Morris Jacobson wrote in his ruling. “This case may well be a close one and difficult for some or all of the jurors to decide. “Under these circumstances, there is a reasonable probability that (Mehserle) cannot get a fair trial.”

We ask, when has a black man’s trial for the murder of someone white ever been moved to another jurisdiction in consideration of the fact that he may not get a fair trial due to race concerns?

Even if EQCA (or any other gay organization for that matter) went on record as speaking out against such a blatant judicial travesty that would be a serious signal towards the advancement of LGBT relations with the African American community.

EQCA and the California NAACP have longed hopped in bed together.  However that union has nothing to do with speaking up for and about issues concerning African Americans here in the Golden state. But the association between the two entities has everything to do with branding and politically correct alliance. This was best and tragically demonstrated during the No On 8 campaign when EQCA wrote the California NAACP chapter president Alice Huffman a hefty check for $200,000 to act as consultant to the campaign for the African American community. Actually the payment was for Huffman’s PR company AC Public Affairs, Inc. Problem was, nobody saw any of the consulting. No literature, no media, no flyers, no billboards, no robo-calls, no nothin’ was distributed in the African American communities anywhere in the state regarding information or endorsement for No On Prop 8 via Miss Huffman. When the backlash occurred against blacks by gays for the grossly inaccurate Yes On 8 headcount on blacks back on election day two Novembers ago, Huffman was nowhere to be found. And even with the original numbers being off in regards to the percentage of blacks who voted in favor of Prop 8 we can’t help but wonder how many of those votes could’ve changed to Nos had there been some exposure to support of No On 8 in the black community.

But the above is  Kors’s idea of supporting and throwing weight behind issues facing African Americans (minorities) in California—making backroom business deals with bougie liver lipped smackin’ black folks whose only credibility is a title but with no intention of following through. May we also add that Huffman supported Hillary Clinton in the presidential primaries (more than likely part of the $200k agreement with Kors).

This brings us to Kors’s relentless obsession with Obama. Having destroyed the 2010 effort for the marriage equality initiative to keep it from making its way to the ballot so that his donors could scab over and heal their wounds after the beating they took with No On 8, Kors has decided that the best route to take in the interim before hitting up the big financial guns for more dough to fund the 2012 marriage equality effort, is to ride Obama. After all, what self-respecting and stand up gay white person would find fault with that?

By doing so Kors gets to accomplish two things:

A. Take the attention away from the fact that EQCA is doing jack squat outside of prepping itself up for a massive donor drive in the next year.

B.  Stoking the flames of gay white resentment against the black guy sitting in the White House (again diverting attention away from EQCA) who can’t and won’t be bothered with making LGBT civil rights a “public priority” until he’s ready and fully prepared to do so. But not a moment sooner.

You see, suddenly and magically in the last several months Geoff has become one among of the LGBT population; an everyday gay man. Why, he’s been wronged and victimized by Obama just like everybody else. Suffering under the heavy brutal yoke of inequality and emphasizing he’s now apart of things, Kors now has joined rallying cry of the indignant LGBT population for Obama to become the fearless leader he said he was. That’s who’s the cause of “our” problems. Let’s blame Obama. YES! That’s the ticket!

Sad thing is, it’s actually working. Folks are buying into Kors’s false cry for justice. They need someone to blame besides themselves for the lack of action on their civil rights. So Kors is successfully easing himself and his organization off the hook and away from any accountability. The game plan is to get all these gay folks in California as worked up and as angry as possible at the president—make it all about a federal issue so that well, around late summer or early fall of this year that’s when the phone calls and emails and the Youtube messaging is gonna pick up pace light-speed style with EQCA soliciting donations for the marriage equality 2012 campaign 24/7. That’s when Obama sure enough is going to be made out to be the sole and only cockblocking mechanism standing in the way of gay equality. That’s when the messaging is going to turn into, “if you don’t donate to us and support our efforts Obama_ _ _ _”

Go ahead. Fill in the blanks.

That’s what Kors is up to. The popularity and immense support of the Prop 8 trial along with Courage Campaign stealing most of the spotlight caught him off guard; EQCA is still groping for some kind of relevant role in relationship to the trial.  So do we hope Obama does the same thing in catching everyone and all off-guard as he makes his move towards LGBT legislation on the federal level. Like we observed this past week it would be interesting and comical to watch Kors scramble for yet another game plan. But if not, you can count on being pummeled by EQCA with doomsday requests to open your wallets before the end of 2010. When it comes right down to it, as some of my drug slingin’ homeboys I grew up with used to say, ‘it’s all about money–and ain’t a damn thing funny.’

I just wanted to respond to 2 statements in the article.

When talking about Geoff Kors, you wrote that he and " his staff’s single-minded destruction of the 2010 marriage equality effort." I just wanted to mention that the 2010 effort is still going on and is starting to get national attention, including a mention in the New Yorker. There is a big statewide event coming up on Feb 6th too, so be on the lookout. People can sign up at http://www.RestoreEquality2010.com to learn more.

The second part that I wanted to talk about is the LGBT community working with minorities. You mentioned Oscar Grant, and I’m not sure if this is well known; however his father was invited to the San Francisco town hall (which was held in a church) where the Bay Area Regional Representatives for the 2010 campaign were elected. His father couldn’t show up, but wrote a moving letter in support of our community that was read at the event. Many people from the LGBT community also rallied for the police officer who shot Oscar Grant to be removed, and to have stricter oversight on BART police.

It’s reasons like this that I support RE 2010. They are truly committed to restoring marriage equality in California and are doing so by building coalitions with communities of color, communities of faith, and rural communities.

Yes, Eric. We did mention EQCA's lack of support of minorities. What does that have to with RE 2010? No one said LGBTs didn't support minorities. And in the case of the meeting—so what?! You invited Oscar Grant's dad and—-what? Yea, exactly. Nothing. Please don't insult me or anyone else by saying that's your way of offering "support" to a minority group.

And RE 2010 as far as we're concerned IS DEAD. There is no campaign. It died when Rick Jacobs pulled out of it. If you want to busy yourself entertaining that thought that's your business. We know better.

Hi Derrick. I think you missed the part where I wrote that "the LGBT community also rallied for the police officer who shot Oscar Grant to be removed, and to have stricter oversight on BART police." This was done before and after his dad was invited to the meeting.

In regards to Rick Jacobs pulling out of the 2010 campaign, that's not entirely true. While the Courage Campaign as a whole is not backing the campaign, Rick has let individual regions decide if they want to support or not. For example, Wendy Aragon and Tracy Green are both Deputy Field Officers with the Courage Campaign, and they are both Regional Reps for Restore Equality 2010. Many Courage Campaign Equality teams are on board with the 2010 campaign as well. Marriage Equality USA is also doing the same thing. They are allowing their individual chapters decide whether or not they want to support the 2010 campaign as well, and many of them do. Gregory Rivera is a chapter leader with MEUSA, and he is also a Regional Rep with RE 2010. MEUSA also recently put a link to the RE 2010 website on their homepage to keep their members in the loop with what is going on, and to let them jump on board if they are interested. We have connections with Courage and we have connections with MEUSA. The campaign is alive and well, as can be seen by the recently revamped website, the hiring of a campaign consultant, and a new strategy called 10 for 10. I’d be happy to chat about this in more detail if you’d like, but in the mean time, be on the lookout for a big statewide event on Feb 6th.

I didn't know that the Courage Campaign was allowing the different regions to decide what they wanted to do. How come this wasn't more publically announced? I thought they completely gave up and I was really mad thinking that they sold out just like EQCA. How do we find out if our local Courage Campaign chapters support going back in 2010?

I didn't know their was a Restore Equality 2010 campaign until my co-worker told me about it at lunch last week. He said their organized and working hard at collecting signatures all around California. He also said theirs another big statewide event coming up February 6. I'm there and I'm bringing my wife and a couple friends. I don't need those big organizations to say go, I like that's it grassroots. How did all those other companies start out? Grassroots. I'm actually on the phone with my wife and WE say, LET'S ROLL! Thanks guy's

When it comes to the Courage Campaign, would we really want Rick Jacobs onboard ANY effort to repeal Prop 8? I would hope not. I mean, this individual has been quoted as saying something along the lines of "frankly, the pro-marriage equality argument is most effective coming from the mouths of straight allies." How on earth can someone with half a brain come to that conclusion? It's been consistently proven that the probability of a person supporting marriage equality rises significantly if that person knows someone who is gay or lesbian. That's why it is so imperative that we come out and tell OUR stories, OUR way.

These "in the closet" campaigns fail miserably. We learned that the hard way with Prop 8 and Question 1. This shameful tactic will be done away with, according to RE2010. On their website they state, "we will run an aggressive and 'out of the closet' campaign where the LGBT community is not hidden in the ads." What a refreshing and commendable NEW approach.

The folks at RE2010 are a breath of fresh air. And they have my unwavering support.

I don’t know about the rest of the state, but the campaign is pretty big up here in the Bay Area and they’re always having events. I went to a fundraiser that they had at Club Trigger a few weeks ago, and that place was packed! They’re having another one on Feb 5th and I’ll be going to that one too.

Lesbian Warrior you'd have to contact Courage for that info. It depends on where you live. Are you apart of a Courage team? If so, contact your team leader. We're pretty sure they shared that on their team conference calls.

The winter is when all those rats all try to get into your warm home. But often when they get in they chew through your cables and plastic pipes causing huge repair bills and immense disruption. So stop them getting in now. A small investment of a mouse repeller could save you thousands.
