DCs Black Gay Pride Cries Foul When Straight Headliner Pulls Out; We Say Look At The Man In Mirror
Sorry DC Black Gay Pride organizers. It looks like this one’s on you. Today we read in DCs Metro Newspaper that rapper Wale pulled out of DCs Black Gay Pride festivities which is taking place the weekend of May 30. According to the Metro promoters of event believe Wale pulled out due to homophobia. They’re quite upset about it.
”Basically we had an agreement, and we were very clear to the different parties and agents involved that this was an LGBT event,” said Earl Fowlkes, a DC Black Pride board member .
”What happened is that when the first blast went out that Wale was going to be at Black Pride he got cold feet, and his agent first said Wale wasn’t available because he had to do family stuff,” Fowlkes. Then we got another e-mail saying he didn’t know what kind of event this was when he agreed to it. So it basically is homophobia rearing its ugly head once again, and on our 20th anniversary, it’s really sad.”
We think what’s even sadder is that Fowlkes and fellow board members passed over the numerous REALLY GOOD openly gay rappers in preference for a straight one. So how is it that they feel they’ve been wronged or that this Wale person is demonstrating homophobia?
Aren’t they doing the same by having some skanky straight cat headline a gay festival?
Even we know of some incredibly talented gay hip hop artists on the East Coast. A collection of gay hip hop artists who’re getting mad love from veteran gay rap artists like LA’s Deadlee, is Philly-based hip hop duo K.D. and D.T. of Sgt. Sass. Check out this video:
Deadlee is right! These kids are the bomb. Why couldn’t they headline DCs Gay Black Pride?
We’ll tell you why. The promoters of this event—boardmembers of DCs Black Gay Pride, are obviously homophobic. What else could be the reason for them not choosing to feature an openly gay rap artist from the start? We find it laughable that they would cry injustice and homophobia after being kicked to the curb by a straight rapper. .
Our black gay and lesbian youth get enough jacked up messages from the black community as it is without going to black gay pride to watch a straight man be objectified in some fashion as if that guy is the ideal of what black gay and same gender loving men should be looking for in a lover or partner. The way we see it this rapper Wales—-all he did was hold the mirror of homophobia up to the faces of those who were responsible for pursuing him to perform at the event in the first place.
As for the rest of you, if you’re into hip hop and rap support your artists in your community. We think Sgt. Sass is cute as hell. And they’re headed to big things. If the promoters of DCs gay pride was smart they need to give them a jingle and see if they’re available. In the meantime we’ve posted a link to Sgt. Sass’s Facebook fan page. Go give ‘em some like love and tell them that RENWL sent you.

hmmm. Interesting article. I have much respect for the gay rappers but unfortunately, as a headliner, those artist wold in no way draw a crowd. As a supporting act that would be great. And they have had gay rap artist in the past at their events I believe. Just my opinion.

Hypocrisy! If DC Black Pride wanted to truly highlight and showcase Black LGBTs, then booking Black LGBT rappers would have been a no-brainer.
If straight rappers don’t think enough of their gay fans to perform for them and be PAID by them to perform, then black gays should stop supporting them.
