Flyin’ Around The Net: Letter From A Freed Slave To His Former Master

From Letters Of Note:

In August of 1865, a Colonel P.H. Anderson of Big Spring, Tennessee, wrote to his former slave, Jourdan Anderson, and requested that he come back to work on his farm. Jourdan — who, since being emancipated, had moved to Ohio, found paid work, and was now supporting his family — responded spectacularly by way of the letter seen below (a letter which, according to newspapers at the time, he dictated).

Rather than quote the numerous highlights in this letter, I’ll simply leave you to enjoy it. Do make sure you read to the end. Read more »

The Trouble With The Black Church: Maybe God Is Trying To Tell You Something

Black Churches: Are They Addressing Our Concerns?

From LOOP 21:

Church used to be the cornstone of all activity, what is it now?

In the past decade the black church’s image has been one of mega churches with its Bentley driving pastors. In addition to saving the souls of thousands, pastors branched out to embark on other endeavors outside of the church such as books, production companies, movies and columns in popular Black magazines. The visibility of the Pastor’s brand took precedence over the actual work being done by the church. But prior to the uber successful publicized mega churches, the black church has always been the cornerstone of the black community. Read more »

Romney Campaign Embraces Group Who Blamed 9/11 On ‘The Virus Of Homosexuality’

Haters are gonna be haters.

Nice. Right Wing Watch (RWW) reports that Mitt Romney’s campaign made public on Monday a letter from the Social Conservatives Coalition that touts the politician’s anti-gay marriage and anti-abortion views while governor of Massachusetts.  But it’s the names of the signed off groups that got RWW’s attention.

One would be Roberto Miranda, who is on recording as saying that  claimed that Satan is behind marriage equality and directly tied advances for gay rights to the attacks on September 11th, 2001.

Here’s a portion of the post:  Read more »

No ‘Legitimate Rationale’ In Denial Of Health Benefits To Same Sex Partners, Says Judge

A judge ruled that the US gov’t has failed to show “a plausible, legitimate rationale” for excluding same-sex couples from California’s long-term health insurance program last Thursday, according to Courthouse News.

The federal government has failed to show “legitimate rationale” for excluding same-sex couples from California’s long-term health insurance program, a federal judge ruled Thursday.

NOM Threatens Starbucks: Stay Out Of Gay Marriage Drama (Or Else…)

We're queer as a $3 bill. And we love Starbucks. Bring it NOM.

Interesting. Does the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) think they can take on a beloved java giant like Starbucks? Apparently so. In a press release issued on Monday, the goofy anti-gay marriage organization straight up told Starbucks to “Stay Out Of Marriage Fights.”

NOM is miffed at Starbucks’ pro-gay marriage activities in Washington state and the company’s decision to ask the Supreme Court to strike down the federal definition of marriage as one man and one woman as well.

The nerve!

Guess that means after posting this we’ll be headed to Starbucks for our usual—-Caramel Venti Frappuccino (with extra caramel. Yummers:)))

Here. Read the whole thing:  Read more »
